At this month's Collaboration Day, the Palm Crest fourth grade team met to discuss upcoming curriculum, including By The Great Horn Spoon!, literary analysis, and writing topics. We reviewed standards covered so far this year to ensure that students have covered all topics before state testing. We put together a test-prep packet to review previous topics in these weeks leading up to the testing date.
This week started off with a bang! The overnight field trip aboard The Pilgrim was packed with activity and learning. The Captain and his officers helped us experience what life was like in the early 1800s, similar to the experiences that Richard Henry Dana wrote about in Two Years Before the Mast. The students worked together as a team to carry out some often-difficult orders. While many felt nervous at times, they walked away with smiles. It was a great experience! Back at Palm Crest, we settled in with a story about a different hero, Gloria Estefan. Her determination and hard work to help others makes her a good role model to follow. We also practiced using object and subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, they for object pronouns; me, you, him, her, it , us, them for subject pronouns). In math, we worked on comparing mixed numbers and fractions greater than one. We also made line plots to organize and review data from a table. In science, we read about how, over time, weathering, erosion, and deposition can cause landforms to take shape. Flowing water creates v-shaped valleys, river curves, and deltas. Waves create rocky cliffs and barrier islands. Wind creates rock sculptures and sand dunes. We studied for and took the Ch 5 Test for social studies. Next week, we will pick up on the road to statehood for CA. Quizlet Study Link: https://quizlet.com/_21n4bn This very short week was very full. We enjoyed the 6th grade play, Aladdin Jr, at the Lanterman Auditorium. In just two short years, our class will be up there on stage!
In language arts, we read about Rosa Parks. We learned how to outline an informational article. We used subject pronouns I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they to take the place of a name of a noun in the subject of a sentence. In math, we modeled multiplying a whole number by a fraction using area models, number lines, repeated addition, and number sentences. We worked on renaming fractions (12/5 twelve fifths) as mixed numbers (2 2/5 two and two fifths) and vice versa. Then we were able to compare mixed numbers and fractions greater than one using <, >, and =. In social studies, we practiced reading historical maps. We also reviewed for our test, which will be next Thursday, 2/25. We also prepared for the overnight field trip by getting our crews together and reviewing sailing vocabulary. This week, we took the Common Formative Assessment for math and language arts. At a future collaboration day, the 4th grade teams will get together to discuss data and its implications
In Language Arts, we read the short story Happy Birthday, Dr. King! We listened to Dr. King deliver his "I Have a Dream" speech and talked about the impact it had on people at that time. Grammar skills included prefixes, suffixes, and pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they). In Math, we reviewed multiplication, division, factors, and multiples. We then returned to fractions by subtracting fractions from whole numbers. This involved having to rename the whole number. For example, if we were subtracting 5 - 3/4, we would think of the 5 as 4 and 4/4. Then, when we subtract the 3/4, we would end up with 4 3/4. In Social Studies, we continued to learn about America's interest in California. More and more settlers headed west due to the idea of Manifest Destiny. As Mexican control over California weakened, many settlers looked to change things up. The Bear Flag Revolt led to a short-lived California Republic until the American troops arrived. The Mexican-American War started in 1846 in Texas, but spilled into California as a chance to fulfill Manifest Destiny. After some battles against Mexico and other battles against the Californios, the fighting in California ended after the Treaty of Cahuenga. The entire war ended and all the fighting stopped after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In Science, we started our study of slow changes. Weathering is the breaking down of rocks. Physical weathering does not change the make-up of the rock. It includes freezing, thawing, plants, exfoliation, and abrasion. Chemical weathering causes the minerals in the rocks to change. It includes rust (oxygen + iron), carbonic acid (carbon dioxide + water), and acid. While weathering breaks rocks down, erosion carries the sediments away, and deposition drops the sediments off in a new place. We talked about the extreme erosion that happened during the Dust Bowl, and how farmers have since conserved soil by planting trees as wind breaks, strip farming, and contour plowing.
