Practice Math Facts (multiplication and division) Typing Club Study for Social Studies Chapter 7 Test on Thursday Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/_27vssk At today's Collaboration Meeting, the 4th grade team attended the math curriculum presentations at the district office. Representatives from Everyday Math, Math in Focus, and Go! Math. reviewed components, and teachers were able to look through some sample materials. At the end of our time, we returned to campus to prepare our classrooms and technology for testing.
This week in Language Arts, we read the nonfiction piece Wildfire. We focused on finding the author's main idea and supporting that idea with details from the text.We also worked on comparing actions with adverbs. In math, we looked at many different geometry topics. We used formulas to calculate perimeter [P = 2L + 2W or P = 2(L + W)] and area [A= L x W]. We defined points, rays, line segments, lines, angles, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and intersecting lines. We described angles as obtuse, acute, or right, and we used a protractor to measure and draw angles. We also added or subtracted angles to compose or decompose larger angles. Lastly, we looked at 2D shapes to see if we could find examples of acute/right/obtuse angles or parallel/perpendicular lines. In Science, we studied and reviewed for the Chapter 5 test on Fast Changes, including earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, mudslides, floods, and volcanoes. In Social Studies, we wrapped up Chapter 7 with advancements in agriculture, including irrigation and crop advancements. California became a major exporter of wheat to other countries. Advancements in the railroads, including refrigerated cars, allowed California to ship crops and fruit to the eastern cities as well. However, tensions between railroad owners and farmers were high because of land disputes and the high cost of shipping. This led to disagreements, including the conflict at Mussel Slough. In language arts this week, we read a new selection in our theme, Nature: Friend and Foe. It was a non-fiction piece called Salmon Summer about the traditions of an Aleut fishing family in Alaska. For word work, we looked at adverbs (how/where/when you do an action: run quickly/play inside/sleep late), words with multiple meanings (fly: the bug vs. fly: the action), and three syllable words. In writing, we finished drafting and started editing our persuasive letters based on By The Great Horn Spoon! In math, we worked on adding and subtracting measurements in different units. For example, if we were adding quarts and gallons, we would need to rename the numbers into like units before adding them together. We applied this skill to solve word problems, as well. In social studies, we read about the Transcontinental Railroad and how it changed life in California. Its founders, the Big Four, also created railroad companies that laid track within California. With the speed of this new route, we also talked about different time zones created to help standardize time keeping across the Earth. In science, we wrapped up our last "fast change" on Earth, volcanoes. Students will test on landslides, mudslides, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes next Wednesday. Throughout the week, we took several CAASPP practice tests to familiarize students with the testing format. Testing will be the last week in April and the first week in May for the fourth graders. Have a great weekend! Read 30 minutes
