This week in Language Arts, we read the nonfiction piece Wildfire. We focused on finding the author's main idea and supporting that idea with details from the text.We also worked on comparing actions with adverbs.
In math, we looked at many different geometry topics. We used formulas to calculate perimeter [P = 2L + 2W or P = 2(L + W)] and area [A= L x W]. We defined points, rays, line segments, lines, angles, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and intersecting lines. We described angles as obtuse, acute, or right, and we used a protractor to measure and draw angles. We also added or subtracted angles to compose or decompose larger angles. Lastly, we looked at 2D shapes to see if we could find examples of acute/right/obtuse angles or parallel/perpendicular lines.
In Science, we studied and reviewed for the Chapter 5 test on Fast Changes, including earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, mudslides, floods, and volcanoes.
In Social Studies, we wrapped up Chapter 7 with advancements in agriculture, including irrigation and crop advancements. California became a major exporter of wheat to other countries. Advancements in the railroads, including refrigerated cars, allowed California to ship crops and fruit to the eastern cities as well. However, tensions between railroad owners and farmers were high because of land disputes and the high cost of shipping. This led to disagreements, including the conflict at Mussel Slough.
